2014 SA Fillies Classic Final Field and Barrier Draw

May 7th, 2014

A capacity field of 16 plus one emergency has been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Group 2 South Australian Fillies Classic (2500m) at Morphettville Racecourse, highlighted by several notable competitors of the 2014 racing calendar so far.

Comfortably claiming the Listed Laelia Stakes (1600m) on March 29th, trainer Robert Smerdon has accepted a position in the SA Fillies Classic Final Field for Every Faith.

Claiming two wins and two places from 14 starts to date, Every Faith is yet to hit peak condition this preparation despite her impressive Laelia victory.

Finishing fifth in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) on April 12th, the Not A Single Doubt filly was unable to match the late pace of eventual champion May’s Dram in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks last time out, finishing a disappointing ninth.

While allocated the awkward barrier 13 for the 2014 SA Fillies Classic, Smerdon is confident jockey Simon Price will get the best from Every Faith this weekend.

Also trained by Robert Smerdon, Rezoned has been included in the final field for the 2014 SA Fillies Classic.

Securing two wins and a place from 10 competitive starts to date, Rezoned is a realistic chance of success this weekend, having been allocated the central barrier 8 and confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey Mark Zahra.

Arguably reaching peak condition over her three most recent starts, Rezoned strolled home to win the Highview Accounting Services Maiden (1600m) on March 20th and produced a strong turn of foot to finish second in the well-contested Polytrack Fillies (1600m) before finishing an unlucky eleventh when hampered for a run twice and squeezed out in the final straight of the Australasian Oaks most recently.

Trainer Leon Macdonald is also offered twice the chance of success in this weekend’s SA Fillies Classic, having accepted positions in the final field for stable mates Artistic Lass and Too Cool To Fool.

Claiming two wins and five places from 20 competitive starts to date, Artistic Lass was arguably the biggest winner of all leading chances for the 2014 SA Fillies Classic crown at Wednesday’s barrier draw, having been allocated the ideal barrier 6.

Unlucky when blocked for a run in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on April 5th, Macdonald is confident the far-firmer Morphettville surface will suit the running style of the Myboycharlie filly on Saturday.

Steadily building to the task over three race starts this preparation, Too Cool To Fool was unlucky to finish second in the Westley Fencing Handicap (2025m) last time out, and will be more than a handful for her competitors if figuring in key position rounding into the final straight.
