October 21st, 2013

Just 10 three-year-old fillies have been nominated for the major Moonee Valley support race on Manikato Stakes’ Night this Friday evening – the 2013 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic.

Getting the action of the two-day Cox Plate Carnival underway, Friday night’s meeting features a triple shot of black-type racing action for the punters.

While the major race is obviously the $1 million Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) for the sprinters, there should also be some interest in the lucrative $220,000 Group 2 Jeep Don’t Hold Back Fillies Classic (1600m).

Nominations for the race have been extended until Tuesday morning, but as it stands there are 10 early entries led by the David Hayes-trained Gregers.

Winner of the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on September 21, the Commands three-year-old was last seen running a credible third to Guelph in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 16.

The only other Moonee Valley Fillies Classic nominated filly coming via a testing Group 1 run in the Thousand Guineas is then the John O’Shea-trained Gypsy Diamond (6th).

The next best rated filly outside of Gregers meanwhile is the Michael Kent-trained Marianne.

A winner of back-to-back races in August, including a 1400m effort at Caulfield, the daughter of Darci Brahma was last seen running a close third to Gregers in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Kent has also nominated for Scratchy Bottom who comes off a winning debut at Moonee Valley.

There are then two other last start winning fillies among the nominees with the Leon Corstens-trained So Bella Arella and Peter Moody’s lightly raced Lady Tatia.

The other fillies in the mix are then the John Hyam-trained Murtle Turtle and Anthony Cummings’ recent Warwick Farm winner Federica.

Stay tuned to view the official 2013 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field and barriers due for release on Wednesday.
